Spinal Cord Injuries

Spinal Cord Injury Information

A Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is damage of the spinal cord resulting in loss of mobility or feeling. Spinal cord injury is not a broken back or a broken neck. These are totally different injuries that may not cause any permanent damage to the spinal cord.

What is SCI?

Spinal cord injuries fall under two broad categories: complete spinal cord injury and incomplete spinal cord injuries. A complete spinal cord injury indicates a total loss of sensation, voluntary movement and function below the level of injury on both sides of the body. An incomplete injury allows for limited function below the primary level of injury. For example, some individuals have sensation and feeling in parts of their bodies, while others can move one limb more than another and may also have higher level functioning on one side of the body.
